Edmonson County was formed in 1825 from portions of Grayson, Hart, and Warren Counties, and named for Captain John Edmonson, Revolutionary War Veteran who died during War of 1812 at battle of River Raisin, 22 Jan 1813.

The County Seat, Brownsville, was established and named for Jacob Brown, Commanding General of the United States army, 1821-1828.
